ISS 2nd Crew: The Photo Album


In March 8, 2001 an international crew of three will begin living aboard the International Space Station as 2nd Crew.
The crew  includes International Space Station Commander Yuri Usachev (Russian cosmonaut) and two U.S. astronauts Susan Helms and James Voss as Flight Engineers.

James S. Voss

NASA Astronaut (Colonel, USA, Ret.)

PERSONAL DATA: Born March 3, 1949, in Cordova, Alabama, but considers Opelika, Alabama, to be his hometown. Married to the former Suzan Curry of Birmingham, Alabama. They have one daughter. Jim enjoys woodworking, skiing, softball, racquetball, scuba diving, and flying an airplane he built himself. As an undergraduate, he participated on the Auburn University Wrestling Team.

Yuri Vladimirovich Usachev

Cosmonaut. Resides in Star City.

PERSONAL DATA: Born October 9, 1957 in Donetsk, Rostov on Don Region, Russia. Married to Vera Sergeevna Usacheva (nee Nazarova) of Kalingrad, Moscow region. They have one daughter, Zhenya. His mother, Anna Grigorevna Usacheva resides in Donetsk. His father is deceased. He has a brother, 5 years older, and a sister, 5 minutes older. He enjoys photography and video production.

Susan J. Helms

NASA Astronaut (Colonel, USAF)

PERSONAL DATA: Born February 26, 1958, in Charlotte, North Carolina, but considers Portland, Oregon, to be her hometown. She enjoys piano and other musical activities, jogging, traveling, reading, computers, and cooking. Plays keyboard for MAX-Q, a rock-n-roll band. Her parents, Lt. Col. (Ret., USAF) Pat and Dori Helms, reside in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

  • Payload: Crew rotation flight - Destiny Laboratory Outfitting - Leonardo Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM) carries equipment racks
STS-102 will be the eighth shuttle mission to visit the International Space Station and will serve as a crew rotation flight. Space Shuttle Discovery will deliver the Expedition Two crew to the station and will return the Expedition One crew to Earth. The primary cargo for the mission is the Leonardo Multipurpose Logistics Module, which contains six racks for the U.S.Destiny Laboratory Module, which was delivered and installed onto the station during STS-98. The STS-102 crew will install Leonardo onto the International Space Station in order to unload its contents and then return it to Earth. Also, two space walks will be conducted to complete assembly operations.
